Hydrotherapy services in Malvern

ME Physio is pleased to announce that our team will be offering hydrotherapy and aquatic physiotherapy services.  In conjunction with Stonnington City Council and the Aquatic Services Team,  our physiotherapy team will be managing and expanding the existing hydrotherapy services at Harold Holt Swim Centre.  ME Physio prides itself on empowering our patients through exercise and this exciting partnership will allow our team to provide another evidence-based clinical option for healthy long term solutions.

Hydrotherapy or aquatic physiotherapy utilises the warmth and buoyancy of the water to reduce muscle spasm, increase circulation and reduce pain.  It is particularly useful for patients whom may find that weight-bearing or land based exercises may aggravate or worsen their conditions.  By reducing the risk of aggravating or increasing pain, patients can then confidently improve strength, joint mobility, core strength and posture.

What are the benefits of hydrotherapy?

  • reduced muscular tension
  • increased muscular strength and endurance using the resistance of water
  • reduced swelling due to hydrostatic pressure,
  • improved balance and core stability

What conditions is hydrotherapy suitable for?

Aquatic Physiotherapy can be used be used to in conjunction with hands-on physiotherapy and can be beneficial for conditions including:

  • spinal or back pain
  • osteo-arthritis
  • ante-natal exercise
  • pre-habilitation prior to surgery to allow safe and pain-free strengthening and mobility
  • post-operative rehabilitation following joint replacements, fractures or tendon repairs
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • balance or co-ordination problems

Our physiotherapists are able to pre-assess your suitability for aquatic physiotherapy and whether it may benefit your condition.  Our team is able to thoroughly assess your mobility and strength prior to entering the water.  This assessment allows us to provide you with a specific and individualised program tailored around your needs and goals.  This program can then be continued individually under our guidance or in a small group class conducted by one of our physiotherapists.  Health rebates can apply for patients with physiotherapy extras.
